Understanding the Siskiyou 2050 General Plan: Planning for the Future of Siskiyou County

Over the past several weeks, the Siskiyou County Planning Department has been sharing information about the Siskiyou 2050 General Plan and the key elements that help shape the future of our communities.

A General Plan serves as a county's long-term roadmap for growth, development, and conservation. Required by California law, it guides decisions about housing, agriculture, transportation, public safety, open space, and other important community priorities. While every county must have a General Plan, each one reflects the unique values, needs, and vision of the community it serves.

Siskiyou County's General Plan update is an opportunity to ensure that future planning decisions continue to support the County's rural character, agricultural heritage, natural resources, economic opportunities, and quality of life for generations to come.

Throughout this series, the Planning Department highlighted the major elements of the General Plan, including:

Land Use Element
The foundation of the General Plan, the Land Use Element helps determine where homes, businesses, agriculture, and open space are located and how future growth is balanced with community needs and available infrastructure.

Open Space Element
This element focuses on preserving the landscapes, working lands, recreation areas, and natural resources that contribute to Siskiyou County's character and way of life.

Conservation Element
The Conservation Element addresses how the County manages and plans for important resources such as water, soil, energy, working lands, and natural areas that support local communities and agriculture.

Safety Element
The Safety Element identifies potential hazards such as wildfire, flooding, and earthquakes and helps guide strategies that reduce risk, improve preparedness, and strengthen community resilience.

Noise Element
This element helps balance community livability with economic activity by addressing noise impacts associated with transportation systems, industrial uses, and other sources.

Circulation Element
The Circulation Element focuses on how people, goods, and services move throughout Siskiyou County, including roads, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, public transit, and supporting infrastructure.

Together, these elements help guide future decisions about growth, development, infrastructure, public services, and resource management throughout Siskiyou County.

Next Step: Zoning Code Update Workshop

As the General Plan establishes the County's long-term vision, the Zoning Code serves as the implementation tool that helps put that vision into action. The Zoning Code provides the detailed regulations that govern how land and buildings may be used throughout the County.

The County is now taking the next step in the planning process by presenting the first comprehensive Zoning Code update ever undertaken in Siskiyou County.

The proposed update is intended to modernize the County's zoning regulations by streamlining processes, reducing unnecessary barriers, expanding allowable uses in some areas, and making the code easier for property owners, businesses, farmers, ranchers, and residents to understand and navigate.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Planning Commission workshop, where staff will present the proposed updates, answer questions, and gather public input.

Zoning Code Update Workshop:

  • Siskiyou County Meeting Chambers - 311 Fourth Street, 2nd Floor, Yreka
  • Wednesday, June 3, 2026
  • 9:00 a.m.

This workshop is informational only. No approvals or final decisions will be made during the meeting.

Whether you are a property owner, business owner, farmer, rancher, or resident interested in the future of Siskiyou County, your participation is encouraged.
