On November 4, 2025, California voters will decide on Proposition 50, a statewide ballot measure that could change how congressional district boundaries are drawn in our state for the remainder of the decade.

Proposition 50 asks voters whether to temporarily replace the existing congressional district map created by the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission with a new map drawn by the state Legislature. This decision will directly affect congressional representation in Siskiyou County and other parts of the state.

On September 2, 2025, the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously (5–0) to issue a statement of opposition to Proposition 50.

Here are some key facts about Proposition 50:

  • Temporary Map – If approved, the Legislature’s congressional district map would be used for elections from 2026 through 2030. After the 2030 Census, the Citizens Redistricting Commission would once again draw new district lines.
  • Change for Siskiyou County – Our county would move from District 1 to District 2. District 2 would include nearby northern counties and extend south along a narrow coastal section to Marin County.
  • Impact on Representation – The new map is designed to shift, making five Republican-held districts more favorable to Democratic candidates. This could influence political representation at the national level.
  • Decision by Voters – The measure will pass or fail by a simple majority vote of Californians in the November 4, 2025, special election.

The outcome of this measure will determine how Siskiyou County is represented in Congress for the next several years.

The Board of Supervisors wants to make sure residents understand what Proposition 50 means for Siskiyou County. Your vote is your voice, and participation in this election will directly shape how our county is represented at the federal level.
