Grand Opening Held for Yreka Basecamp, Siskiyou County’s Low-Barrier Emergency Shelter
The County of Siskiyou, in partnership with Northern Valley Catholic Social Services (NVCSS) and the City of Yreka, proudly celebrated the grand opening of Yreka Basecamp, a new year-round emergency shelter offering comprehensive services to individuals experiencing homelessness in the region.
Located adjacent to the County’s Social Services campus, Yreka Basecamp is the first facility of its kind in Siskiyou County. The shelter will operate 24/7 with a low-barrier, housing-first model focused on helping individuals stabilize and transition into permanent housing. The 32-bed facility also includes pet accommodations, storage for personal belongings, and access to a range of supportive services.
“This project represents a significant milestone in our county’s efforts to address homelessness with dignity, compassion, and practical solutions,” said Siskiyou County Health and Human Services Director, Dr. Sarah Collard. “It is the result of strong collaboration between local government, community partners, and service providers.”
Basecamp will offer:
- On-site case management and housing navigation
- Mental health and substance use support services
- Employment assistance and community resource connections
- Optional peer support and 12-step programs through the attached Six Stones Wellness Center
- Indoor and outdoor space for companion animals
- Indoor hydroponic gardens, wellness-focused gathering spaces, and personal storage options
The facility is staffed by NVCSS and will operate year-round with support from community volunteers. Basecamp is designed as a safe and supportive environment for individuals ready to take steps toward stability, employment, and long-term housing—without requiring preconditions such as sobriety or employment.
The project was made possible through state and local funding, including Proposition 47 reinvestment dollars, and reflects a growing regional commitment to addressing homelessness in a coordinated and trauma-informed way.
As homelessness continues to be a significant concern in rural Northern California, the opening of Yreka Basecamp marks a critical investment in public health, safety, and community well-being.
