Black Butte Transfer Station Expands Recycling Services
Effective October 20, 2025, the Black Butte Transfer Station in Mt. Shasta will begin accepting beverage containers for recycling.
This expansion marks an important step for South County residents, who currently have very limited recycling options outside of the Siskiyou Opportunity Center.
Accepted/Not Accepted Beverage Containers:
- Cans: Aluminum cans. Cans should be clean and dry. Flattening is not required.
- Not accepted: tin cans, foil, or pie plates.
- Glass: Food and beverage glass containers. Containers should be rinsed and lids removed. Labels do not need to be removed.
- Not accepted: cookware, window glass, ceramics, or mirrors. Glass must be sorted by color.
- Plastics: Bottles and jugs marked #1 PETE and #2 HDPE.
- Not accepted: Clam shells (plastic containers that contain fruit, prepared salads, muffins, etc.)
Materials Already Accepted at No Cost:
The Black Butte Transfer Station will continue to accept the following materials free of charge:
- Cardboard
- Used oil
- Mattresses
- Scrap metal
- Paint
Important Notice
The Black Butte Transfer Station is a drop-off location only. It is not a CRV redemption center, and no cash will be provided for containers dropped off.
